Ask The Expert: Do I Need a Naturopathic Doctor?

Interest in alternative and preventative health care is growing. However, many people are still unclear what Naturopathic Medicine is and if they need to see a Naturopathic Doctor. Below are five reasons to see a Naturopathic Doctor and achieve your health goals this New Year!

1. You are looking for reliable, trustworthy alternatives to conventional medical care.

Naturopathic doctors have 8 years of full time post secondary education. To achieve my ND title I was required to complete a 4 year honors degree in medical science and went on to complete a second 4 year degree in Naturopathic Medicine. It is a passion of mine to blend current research and diagnostics, with proven centuries-old system of natural, non-toxic therapies. This makes it easy to work together with my patient’s other health care providers. Seeing a Naturopathic Doctor does not mean you need to stop seeing your current health care providers, we work to compliment the care you are already receiving.

2. You have vague symptoms, your lab work is normal but you still feel unwell.

Lab work is an important part of your health care picture. A large number of my patients are told that their blood test results are normal, but they still feel unwell. This can be very frustrating!  Naturopathic Doctors offer lab work above and beyond the testing performed by your medical doctor from accredited labs around the world. For example, testing for food sensitivities, Lyme disease and in depth hormone panels are commonly ordered for my patients.

3. You are interested in optimizing your health and like the idea of preventing disease before it starts, but are overwhelmed by the amount of health information out there.

Many of my patients come to their first visit taking a multivitamin, probiotic and fish oil supplement at the very least. However, they want clarification on which supplements to take, which brands to buy, and what dose is right for them. A Naturopathic Doctor is a great resource for this, because taking everything beneficial that you read about online can be expensive and unnecessary. For example, by examining your diet we might be able to tell you that you are getting enough nutrients and do not need a multivitamin. In contrast, some patients might require more nutrients than can be obtained from the diet in which case individualized vitamins and minerals will be prescribed.

Prevention is paramount in Naturopathic Medicine. Naturopathic Doctors also take an in-depth look at your family history, diseases you may be predisposed to from nutrient deficiencies in your diet, or environmental exposure to toxins. By taking this comprehensive approach, we can come up with a preventative health plan that is individualized to you and your lifestyle.

4. You want to participate in your health care and understand how your body works.

I believe taking the time to educate my patients is the key to success. Everyone knows they should eat better, stop smoking and exercise more. How come this is so difficult? I love to work with my patients to remove their obstacles to being well. My training in lifestyle counseling helps me to do this. I can give any recommendation, but I need to make sure that it is one that is manageable and will work for your lifestyle. This teamwork approach seems to offer my patients success in achieving the health and wellness goals.

5. Think you have all of your health needs addressed? Why not try Naturopathic Medicine anyway?

Some people book an appointment for “wellness”. This is great too! We usually find some underlying issues that need to be addressed, even if a particular pathology or disease has not emerged. It can be helpful to have your health history and blood work reviewed by a Naturopathic Doctor who is interested in seeing values in optimal, not pathologic, ranges.

Finally, most people have coverage for Naturopathic Medicine under their extended health benefits. Also, most Naturopathic Doctors offer free 15 minute consults if you want more information to determine if Naturopathic Medicine right for you.

So why not get an alternative perspective on your health concerns and health care goals? Maybe getting a look at your health through a different lens will help to make 2016 your best year yet!
